- Large, 1/4 to 1/2 inch, usually black. Does not eat wood — it excavates damp, decaying wood to nest in, leaving clean sawdust-like frass. Its presence indoors usually means there is a moisture problem somewhere in the structure.
- Pharaoh ant
- Tiny, 1/16 inch, pale yellow to light brown. Nests entirely indoors in wall voids and behind fixtures. Never spray these — spraying causes budding, where the colony fragments into several new nests.
Signs you have a ant problem
- Trails along baseboards, counters, or under sinks
- Sawdust-like frass near window frames or door trim (carpenter ants)
- Large numbers around pet food, sugar, or grease
- Soft or hollow-sounding wood, especially near a past leak

What to expect afterwards
- Expect MORE visible ants for 2–4 days. That's the bait working — foragers are recruiting nestmates to it.
- Do not spray or wipe the bait placements. Killing the foragers stops the bait reaching the queen.
- Normal cleaning is fine. Just avoid scrubbing directly over bait points.
- Trails should thin noticeably by day 7 and stop by day 10 for most species.

Will spraying the ants I see get rid of them?
No. Spraying kills the foragers, which are maybe 10% of the colony, and the queen keeps producing replacements. With pharaoh ants spraying actively makes it worse by causing the colony to split. Bait is what reaches the queen.
Why are there MORE ants after treatment?
That's the expected response for the first 2–4 days. Non-repellent bait doesn't kill on contact, so foragers survive long enough to recruit nestmates to the food source and carry it home. Rising activity means it's working.
How long until the ants are gone?
Pavement and odorous house ants usually stop within 7–10 days. Carpenter ants take 2–4 weeks because the colony is larger. Pharaoh ants can take several weeks and need a strict bait-only protocol.
Do carpenter ants mean I have structural damage?
Not necessarily, but it means you have damp wood somewhere, because that's the only thing they nest in. The ants are a symptom. Finding the leak or condensation source matters more than the treatment itself.
